Healthy Marriages

  • Healthy communication utilizes both verbals and nonverbals to communicate an individual’s thoughts, feelings, needs, and desires to their spouse. Healthy communication is respectful towards one’s spouse and of one’s self. Communication is a two way street, meaning for communication to be healthy we must be receptive to the thoughts, feelings, needs, and desires of our spouse as well.

  • In any relationship, disagreements are bound to occur. How a couple handles disagreements can contribute to the health of a marriage.

TherapistAid.com provides a simple document “Fair Fighting Rules” to assist couples experiencing disagreements.

  • Accountability is an important component of a healthy marriage.

When we are accountable, we take responsibility for our own actions. Rather than displacing blame to our spouse, we first examine our own thoughts, behaviors, and feelings and how they may have impacted the relationship.

If there is a particular area for which we struggle, having an accountability partner may be an option to consider. Accountability partners are trusted entities with a similar set of beliefs that encourage, support, and resource those actions we engage in that align with our beliefs and confront (with love and grace) those behaviors which do not align with our set of beliefs.

One example of an accountability partner would be a person who acts as a sponsor and assists someone struggling with a substance addiction in abstaining from alcohol and/or drugs. Modern technology can also help individuals with accountability as with Covenant Eyes which provides screen accountability for those struggling with porn addiction.
